While the COVID-19 crisis deepens, what future is awaiting cross-border collaboration in the performing arts? With the dawn of the new decade on the one hand, and the current crisis on the other, the time could not be more right to start (re)building, together, the foundations of the performing arts sector. For this reason, we are launching Rewiring the Network, a collective reflection exercise aiming to reinvent the future of our sector. And we hope that this project will inspire the whole cultural ecosystem at such a crucial time of its history. |
Coordinated by Joris Janssens (IDEA Consult), Martina Fraioli (IDEA Consult) and Delphine Hesters (Independent researcher, advisor and facilitator), our Rewiring the Network trajectory aims to reflect on the development of a more sustainable future for the performing arts, and the role IETM can take in it. The project will last all through 2020 and into 2021, and will be shaped around our members' views and ideas. Although this trajectory is intended for our members, the outcomes and intermediary reflections will be available to the public. You can find all info about the project here. |
To get the reflection started, we are publishing a series of four blog posts by Joris Janssens about the past, the present and the possible futures for our network. In addition to outlining our own trajectory, this series serves as a toolkit for any other cultural entity who would like to follow our lead: |
Episode 0: How we will shape the future of the network together The first episode of the series brings an in-depth introduction to the journey ahead of us and explains the methodology we will follow. Read it here. |
Episode 1: The 5 promises and pressures of international cultural networking The second episode of the series flashes back to past achievements of IETM since its misty origins in the early eighties, until now, and the conditions for the success. Read it here. |

Stay tuned - two more episodes are on the way! |

IMPORTANT ONLINE BRAINSTORM WITH MEMBERS - 19 MAY 2020 |
We will officially launch the project with our first online brainstorm with members on 19 May from 12:00 to 15:30 CET. |
The key questions for the brainstorm are: What’s on our mind? What’s challenging and inspiring our work? Where do we want to go and what would we need a network for? And what can all of us bring to the table to have a real sustainable impact? |
This discussion with our members will be a crucial one for our sector, especially at a time when the COVID-19 is, itself, entailing structural changes and reshuffling our priorities. Performing arts organisations of all size and nature as well as freelancers and national funding bodies who fit our very diverse membership and want to be key players in designing a more sustainable international performing arts sector are welcome to become a member. ©️ Anomaly |
The results of our Rewiring the Network trajectory will feed IETM’s future agenda and define our strategy for the years ahead. As the project unfolds, we will continue developing further activities including other brainstorm sessions and publications. ©️ Daniel Hansen |
