A Year’s Worth of Answers
In March 2018, Oracle delivered the world’s first autonomous database—a technology leap that’s been decades in the making and that arrives just in time to handle the pressures and headaches of today’s business world. But since no one has ever before delivered a self-driving database that can handle all of a business’s workloads, the technology raised a lot of questions among database pros and business leaders alike. Exactly how does it improve security? What makes it really “autonomous”? Here, I tackle those questions and many others with answers gleaned from our blogs and other publications.

American Eagle Outfitters’ Tech
When clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) reported record annual revenue of $3.8 billion earlier this year, the company credited not only its youthful styles but also its investments in technology. Among the investments? The company consolidated onto one global HR platform, Oracle Human Capital Management Cloud, in part to accommodate the HR complexity of partnerships around the globe as well as the associated legal, tax, and reporting requirements. A true partnership.

Diversity: How to Move Beyond Lip Service
If done right, technology can improve diversity, according to an executive panel at Oracle OpenWorld 2018. Oracle showed cloud-based HR applications, including one that uses machine learning to predict a job applicant’s chances for success. Gapsquare’s CEO, Zara Nanu, said her company uses the applications “to help companies understand their payroll and HR data,” so they can spot pay inconsistencies. Three more takeaways.

Subscription Services: Coming to an Industry Near You
“We’re entering an era of experience over product, where consumers are questioning the very notion of ownership,” says Oracle Vice President of Product Development Des Cahill. Although most companies lack the pricing, billing, monitoring, and revenue management to support complex subscription models, the good news is that new software makes it possible.

At GE Digital, Hackfest Chases Big Ideas
“We do hackathons a bit differently,” explains GE Digital’s Kamil Litman. “Instead of use cases being fed to the teams, we want part of it to be the ideation phase.” Not long ago, the company created a way to give energy buyers real-time pricing insights at GE oil and gas subsidiary Baker Hughes. Also helpful: Oracle demonstrated how other teams have used cloud technologies for their own projects. What came out of the three-day hackathon
