On this day in 1949 it was reported that United States President Harry Truman promised the Commonwealth Government "every assistance as far as technical advisers were concerned" in the plans for the Snowy Mountains scheme. "The scheme, which envisages the diversion of the waters of the Snowy River into the Murray and the Murrumbidgee rivers, will eventually provide more than half a million additional acre feet of water annually for irrigation purposes and generation of 1,720,000 kilowatts of hydro-electric power," the story on the front page of The Canberra Times read. READ MORE
