Why are people talking about Thundersnow?

If you've been on social media this morning you have seen friends in the east of Scotland complaining about an 'explosion' last night.

A rare combination of wintry conditions caused 'thundersnow' to crash above the heads of Scots in the wee hours of this morning.

Police Scotland Control Rooms tweeted at around 5am on Friday: “We have received a number of calls regarding people concerned about explosions heard."

There is a lot of disruption on Scotland's trunk road network this morning. Heavy snow is also affecting ScotRail services until at least 10am and the Queensferry Crossing was closed.
