A BYU vs. Duke volleyball game sent shockwaves over the weekend after Duke player Rachel Richardson talked about her experience on Twitter of being heckled and having racial slurs and threats yelled at her during a match. Richardson wrote that she and her fellow Black teammates began to feel unsafe and that BYU’s staff was aware and did not intervene.
Several Utah lawmakers and high-profile members of the community reacted to the event on social media. Here’s what a few of them said:
“This appalling incident should be a reminder of why discussions of diversity and inclusion are so critical, and why our state must continue to make strides toward becoming a more accepting and inclusive place generally for everyone.” — Rep. Sandra Hollins
“I’m angry at the racist who spewed this inappropriate language, as well as at the others present who didn’t immediately call him out and shut it down. We must be better.” — Sen. Todd Weiler
“It is extremely sad when this type of behavior continues to happen. It’s up to every to speak up against it or it will continue to happen.” — Jeanetta Williams, president of the NAACP Salt Lake Chapter
