In order to better understand the potential health and environmental implications of the Great Salt Lake's shrinking water levels, the Utah Air Quality Division’s technical team will begin reviewing possible locations for the placement of four new monitors.

The dust monitors will be used to capture wind events over the lake's exposed bed to determine the levels of arsenic and other pollutants carried to the Wasatch Front.

Potential locations for the monitors are being considered based on proximity to affected communities adjacent to the lake and in areas where the monitors will be most effective at illustrating the breadth of wind-born dust, according to Bryce Bird, the division’s director.

“We will be able to look at the metals, things like arsenic and other components of the dust ... Then, we will be able to identify any hazardous components in that dust that would be impacting public health," Bird said.

Moore expressed his qualms to Secretary Yellen, saying, “I am concerned ... that they’re just going to raise (corporate taxes) just to cover more spending that we’re seeing from the president’s budget. What am I to tell these companies and individuals?”

Yellen agreed with Moore on some concerns, though she pointed out that the 21% tax rate caused a "race to the bottom."

Later, Moore told the Deseret News that he was afraid the federal government may start "creeping (the tax rate) back up to where it’s an easier decision for companies to offshore some of their work." 

This decision, Moore speculated, could result in job loss for many Americans.
