Dear John ,
Have you ever noticed yourself taking a sharp intake of breath when you’re surprised? Or letting out a big sigh of relief at the end of the day?

Whether we're aware of it or not we've all experienced how our breath is connected to emotions. Daily stressors, tensions and physical habits can create physical and energetic obstacles in our bodies. We can develop unconscious breathing patterns where our breath becomes gradually more shallow or stilted and we restrict the flow of breath and prana (life energy) in the body. Our regular breathing pattern starts to mimic how we are when we’re stressed or frightened.
But the good news is that yoga gives us the tools to become aware of, and change, these breathing patterns and in turn calm the nervous system.

When we work on freeing the breath through pranayama (breathing exercises) and yoga poses to support our optimum posture, we are also working on letting the life energy flow through the body.
Pranayama has the effect of energizing, relaxing and healing the body, letting everything fall into place. It literally increases and balances the life energy in your system.

Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? Wondering where to get started?

Try these classes that combine Pranayama with movement and meditation or follow a Pranayama program: Esther's 5 minute breathing practices or
10 days of pranayama.

Enjoy,
