Hello, You might know Nairobi for its many accolades and not so humble brags: the city under the sun, its graphics art scene in public transportation vehicles, matatus, its love for witty but lethal Twitter battles (should we call them X wars now? nee)... But this September the city hosts Mozfest House: Kenya! We are a few weeks away from meeting you in Nairobi and as we start to make lists of what to pack in our bags, we would like to share with you a few highlights of what’s on the horizon. First, The schedule is now LIVE, and we’re thrilled to invite you to explore MozFest House: Kenya with over 30 interactive discussions, one hackathon, five art and media installations, eight workshops and much more. Top of that list: I will be speaking with Meta whistleblower Daniel Motaung, former content moderator and unionizer, about the fight for a fairer future of digital work on the continent and what’s next after the lawsuit against Meta. And we won’t shy from tackling the hard questions: Will Motaung’s vision for a power shift surrounding the invisibility of content moderation work set up a stage for digital work revolution? What will it take to truly reimagine content moderation and gig work that’s built upon equitable and ethical principles across the globe? MozFest House: Kenya will also respond to crucial questions about how we can leverage data to power community-led solutions. Mozilla’s Data Futures Lab is hosting a showcase of five innovative projects from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and Ghana. The projects explore how to integrate Natural Language Processing into traditional African languages, disinformation monitoring tools, and more. You can read more about what to expect at MozFest here. If you missed out on tickets, don’t worry! There are other ways to participate: explore our schedule of sessions and join us virtually to participate in our Dialogues and Debates with Watch Parties and an exclusive Q&A with some of our speakers on Discord here. You can also join our online community discussions under #MozFest House: Kenya. Looking forward to meeting you in Nairobi! Tupatane MozFest! Koliwe Majama Senior Program Officer, Mozilla |
