Dear CHAC Community,

First Friday in the Northside continues, Nov. 5th join us from 6pm-9pm at HourGlass Hair Studio
2555 46th Ave. Denver, CO 80211.

As part of CHAC's Recuerdos 2021 CHAC is honored to end the Dia de Los Muertos season with the community celebration and Art Crawl, Friday, Nov. 5th in our partnership with 40 West and Pirate: Contemporary Art.

This free event begins at 5:30 pm, and features district-wide oferendas created by local Latinx artists, fire dancers & Huitzilopochtli Aztec dancers. Festivities kick off from Pirate Art Gallery (7130 W 16th Ave, Lakewood, CO 80214) with a procession to Pasternack’s. Enjoy works of art by local artists, elementary school students, and grab light bites from food trucks.

CHAC will also host a tribute to the Pirate's own Day of the Dead pioneer Bob Luna at the Pirate. Luna, who passed away in July, was an art activist who taught art to historically excluded students within Denver Public Schools, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Museo de las Americas and at various Denver Parks and Recreation Centers.

Celebrating Dia de Los Muertos with everyone has been beautiful and up lifting. We thank you for celebrating this ancient custom with us.

FEATURED CHAC ARTIST
KACY JONEZ

Meet Kacy Jonez! Raised on a farm in east Texas, Kacy learned from a young age to be resourceful in her creativity. Mostly self-taught, her DIY spirit and beauty-in-all aesthetic have been refined and honed through the years, translating to a style all her own. Often utilizing found and recycled materials, Kacy expresses herself through painting, screen printing, mixed-media collage, murals, woodworking, sculpture, and gardening. She’s spent her life dedicated to art in many forms and is now learning to tattoo. She is thrilled to learn this ancient, sacred craft and be part of the continuum of tattoo magic. Kacy is grateful for the art community she has found, the mentors and her ancestors that guide her. The future is bright and she is excited to contribute to its beauty while honoring the past.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
CHAMPURRADO

By Mely Martínez – Mexico in my Kitchen

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes
Servings 8 Cups

Ingredients

  • 8 cups of water
  • 5 oz. of piloncillo or ½ cup of sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 Mexican Chocolate tablets 6.5 ounces
  • ¾ cup of masa harina corn flour

Instructions

  • Place 6 cups of water in a large saucepan along with the piloncillo and the cinnamon stick. Heat water until it starts boiling and then reduce the heat and allow to simmer for about 10 minutes until the piloncillo has melted. If you are using regular sugar, this step will take less time, since the sugar will dissolve in about 4-5 minutes.
  • Once the piloncillo or sugar has dissolved, add the 2 Mexican Chocolate Tablets and allow about 5 minutes to dissolve, stirring from time to time.
  • Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, pour the other 2 cups of water and mix in the masa harina. Mix well with an egg beater if possible to avoid forming any clumps. Make sure you have a very creamy texture.
  • When the chocolate has completely dissolved, slowly pour the masa harina mixture into the saucepan while stirring, to make sure there are no clumps. If you want to be safe and avoid masa harina clumps, use a strainer to pour the mixture.
  • Turn the heat to medium-high until the Champurrado starts boiling, and then reduce the heat to low and gently simmer, stirring constantly. After 6-8 minutes the mixture will thicken. Allow to cook for 5 more minutes. Be careful while serving the champurrado, its thick consistency keeps the drink extremely hot!
