L.A.’s Ultimate Halloween Event: Inferno, The Rite and Burlesque

American Contemporary Ballet opens its 13th season at Television City with three provocative, eerie creations on alternating nights throughout October, offering a live Halloween entertainment experience unlike any other in the city. Visit the underworld, witness a sacrifice and see the world’s strangest burlesque. Compelling, surprising and completely unmissable, the show may be different each night, but its message remains the same: Beauty is skin deep; evil goes straight to the bone.

My first show of hers was part of The Sugar Water Festival in 2005 (full disclosure: this whole article has required a lot of googling to remember the years/locations!) and though I barely knew her music, I was hypnotized by her as a performer. Really, she’s a performance artist, slipping between stations at the theremin and sampler and cups of tea. The way she spins the room. I saw this and thought, “How do I do that?”…

Despite the Moldy Tunes, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Is Not Your Father’s Nihilism

A bro-comedy director, a Method-y actor, and a pop star walk into a bar — and that’s as close to a joke as you’ll get with Joker: Folie à Deux, the inevitable sequel/event du jour, released within five weeks of an election in which the most evil-clownish of American electees seeks to re-enter the presidency and turn the federal system into scorched earth. Coincidence?...
