Your weekly COVID-19 update

Every Tuesday, the Maclean's daily newsletter will catch you up on what you need to know about Canada's fight against the coronavirus. This week, Patricia Treble focuses on one story worth watching, and you can get a sneak peek here. You'll also get the same mix of Maclean's stories you expect every day if you scroll down below.

On Monday, as Alberta announced 291 new cases of COVID-19, Premier Jason Kenney announced that the province was ready to “safely and cautiously” open parts of its society, including libraries and gyms, with restrictions. In the past week, Alberta’s caseload has effectively plateaued, averaging 351 cases a day, up slightly from 323 in the previous week. However, COVID-19 hospitalizations in that province are now around 200, below the threshold for the steps taken on Monday.

On Monday, Atlantic Canada announced just four new cases of COVID-19, including two in Newfoundland and Labrador and another one each for New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. That is the lowest daily total for the region since Dec. 28, and comes after restrictions were added to deal with outbreaks.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Canada dropped another 15 per cent to 330 for the week ending on Feb. 27.  A month before that, the weekly death toll was 964. The drop is due largely to two factors: the overall decline in cases as well as the vaccination of the highest-risk populations, especially seniors in long-term care homes.
