What's up at Metairie Towers? And hurricane season heats up.

Hurricane Hermine? The calendar tells us it’s fall, but the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea are reminding us we're still in the thick of hurricane season. And what had been an eerily quiet season – hey, nobody was complaining! – is heating up. That disturbance in the Caribbean has become a tropical depression,  and is expected to eventually become Hurricane Hermine. UghFor all of our tropical weather updates, please sign up for our Hurricane Center newsletter.

Troubled towers: Speaking of hurricanes, Metairie Towers, the huge condo building that was damaged during last year's Hurricane Ida will remain empty a while longer. An insurance dispute has snagged repairs at the seven-story building, but Chad Calder reports that things might get moving again soon.

Lakefront development: On the north shore, meanwhile, developers are making a pitch for a new retirement community/hotel/retail development on the former Copeland land along the Mandeville lakefront. It might be a tough sell in development-averse Mandeville.

In the blood: One of the things that makes cancer so dangerous is that the disease is often not detected until it’s too far along for effective treatment. What if a series of blood tests could change that? The medical technology might be closer than you think, health reporter Emily Woodruff writes. And for more health care news, please sign up for The Checkup, our weekly newsletter.

Help for the locals: It was big news when coffee giant Starbucks said it would shutter its store on busy Canal Street in the Central Business District, with security concerns being one of the deciding factors. Our dining writer Ian McNulty offers his unique perspective on the closure – and how local eateries contend with the same struggles, but without the corporate muscle of a national chain. For even more food and drink coverage, please sign up for our Where NOLA Eats newsletter.

Remember him? LSU fans will surely remember Lindsey Scott. He was a quarterback in former coach Les Miles’ recruiting class but left LSU for greener pastures. Contributing writer Ted Lewis caught up with Scott, who has been to five schools over the past seven years and is making the most of his last shot.

Thanks for reading Lunch Line today – and remember, you can keep up all day long at NOLA.com.
