What Sparks Poetry is a serialized feature that explores experiences and ideas that spark the writing of new poems. In our third series, The Poems of Others II, twenty-four poets pay homage to the poems that led them to write. Each Monday's delivery brings you the poem and an excerpt from the essay.
Take a strip of white paper, turn
the top of the strip in your right hand so
it faces the floor, then glue the ends together
If you go along on the outside, it seems
I am not connected to you. I’m trying
to think now if it has to be white paper
Can it show some light through?

What Sparks Poetry:
Karen An-hwei Lee on Mei-mei Berssenbrugge’s “Farolita”

"Today, as I re-read this poem, I enjoy the way it yields to light, as if the paper strip changes into a page, and the page of the poem into a farolita, or vice versa. In this way, it’s mostly about light without saying the word light more than once. It blurs the boundaries of thingness and mystery, obliquely pointing us to tangible and intangible realms of knowing."

Cover of Dean Young's new book, Solar Perplexus

"Young has a way of saying things perfectly but which is difficult to memorize. It’s hard to remember the order of all the words....The poems in this book are experiences; your brain starts to vibrate with a combination of logic and its opposite."
