Temperatures will only drop down to just 78 degrees overnight. But the Twin Cities will get a little break tomorrow, with a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon that will cool things into the mid-80s in the late afternoon. That slightly cooler weather is expected to continue into Saturday. Find the latest on Updraft.

A surprisingly strong tax report from Minnesota finance officials probably won’t factor heavily into the final talks around a new state budget.

The state collected almost $1.8 billion more than it was anticipating in May. But the monthly revenue reports from the Department of Minnesota Management and Budget typically aren’t used by lawmakers when they set the budget.

Lawmakers are working to approve a new two-year budget by June 30 to avoid a potential shutdown for all or parts of state government.

The Minneapolis City Council's public safety committee moved forward a resolution to provide police with $5 million dollars to pay for additional overtime. Police say the anticipated overtime partly makes up for a decline in the number of active officers since 2020.

City officials say about 160 officers have left the department since the start of 2020. Another 60 officers are on disability leave but still employed.

Chief Medaria Arradondo told the council committee that the decrease in staff accounts for 149,000 fewer hours worked so far in 2021 than at the same time last year.

Friday’s COVID-19 numbers show some of the most encouraging signs since the earliest months of the pandemic.

Minnesota's averaged 199 new cases a day over the past seven reporting days — the first time it’s fallen below 200 since April 2020. Five weeks ago, it topped 1,500 a day.
