The Minneapolis City Council's public safety committee moved forward a resolution to provide police with $5 million dollars to pay for additional overtime. Police say the anticipated overtime partly makes up for a decline in the number of active officers since 2020. City officials say about 160 officers have left the department since the start of 2020. Another 60 officers are on disability leave but still employed.
Chief Medaria Arradondo told the council committee that the decrease in staff accounts for 149,000 fewer hours worked so far in 2021 than at the same time last year.
