Dear Reader,

The government’s traffic light system for foreign holidays has caused much consternation but there may be some respite in sight. We reported this morning that officials are considering allowing fully vaccinated individuals to visit amber list countries without having to quarantine. Meanwhile, the Government remains gripped by the fear of a third wave but are they putting their public pronouncements in the right context? Henry Bodkin and Alex Clark examine what the official Covid charts aren’t showing us.

GB News’s launch may have suffered a few technical glitches, but it is the stampede of self-aware corporations pulling their advertising from the fledgling news channel that has caused the most surprise. It may also backfire, argues Allister Heath in a searing column in which he calls for corporations to ditch the politics and return to their true raison d’tre.

Of the many reasons for the West’s turning against China, the alleged genocide in Xinjiang is one of the most morally powerful. It remains, however, very difficult to uncover what is truly going on there. Sophia Yan, our Beijing correspondent, recently visited Xinjiang for nine days and produced a remarkable series of reports. In her final entry, she details the many disturbing and often physical ways in which Chinese officials attempted to halt her reporting.

Finally, the dominance of public school pupils at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge has long been the subject of heated debate. Yesterday The Telegraph revealed that a single school had got 22 pupils into one Cambridge college. We have created this excellent interactive tool with which you can find the local schools that get the most Oxbridge offers each year.
