Last week I asked our readers who had been married the longest. Cheryl Barney and her husband were married for almost 66 years before her husband passed away in January. I also asked how our readers met their spouses. With her permission, here is Gale Boyd's story:
"We've been married for 55 years. I joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 16 in Los Angeles. My parents refused to allow me to be baptized until they found out I had fallen for a boy at church. They finally figured it was 'new boy, new church,' and it would be temporary. Still, when I graduated from high school in 1964, they wouldn't allow me to attend BYU, figuring that there I might meet and actually marry a Latter-day Saint boy.
"The school they liked turned out to be one of the top party schools in the country. I went up early for orientation and knew before classes even started that it was going to be rough. I attended a welcome dance with a guy I had just met and pled with him to find me some Mormons. He said he did know one, a guy he had actually roomed with and who was there at the dance. He said he'd introduce me. I knew as we walked across the dance floor that he was going to be 'the one,' and I expressed my disappointment to Heavenly Father that he wasn't a good dancer. He was older and left for a 30-month foreign mission the following March at age 23. We were married 5 months after he got home. We have 6 kids (whom we have raised in 4 countries), 17 grandkids, and 7 great-grandchildren."
What the race to replace Rep. Chris Stewart means for the nation — and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy
The Utah Republican Party convention takes place today, and with a narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives, the special election to replace Rep. Chris Stewart is of national importance.
Experts say House Speaker Kevin McCarthy will be looking for a certain type of candidate to become victorious: a Republican who is ready to get to work quickly with House leadership.
“Leadership will be keenly honed in on this race,” former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz told the Deseret News. “They want somebody they can work with, and when the votes are close, go get their vote. With such a slim majority this is even more pivotal to how votes will ultimately go.”

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in their ruling of Dobbs v. Jackson. Sen. Mike Lee commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday.
Lee, a long-time defender of the Dobbs decision, said the ruling restored “sanity and compassion” to the country's laws. To further commemorate the anniversary, he signed on to a resolution celebrating the “millions of lives that will be saved” because of the Supreme Court's ruling.
“Now we’re positioned to acknowledge that every life from conception to natural birth deserves our protection, and our compassion and our care and yes, in some states, they’re going to do that differently than others,” he said.
