In an acute care facility, a patient is exposed to many different people and many different settings during his or her stay. More exposure means more opportunities for the transfer of bacteria and viruses. In the physician’s office, the patient may encounter fewer people than he or she would in the hospital, but there are still many opportunities for infectious disease to be transmitted—not only by healthcare workers, but also by office workers and other patients. The Infection Control Manual for Outpatient Settings explains the steps physicians and their staff should take to protect patients, employees, and the environment and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. |
