Take the scenic route with these hiking trails |
This week's cooler temperatures might be the perfect incentive to get you to lace up your shoes and hit a nearby hiking trail. If you're looking for a different trail to try, check out the Provin Trails Park located less than 10 miles away from downtown Grand Rapids. This adventure gives a truly rustic trek with land that is largely undeveloped with natural surfaced trails and little infrastructure. Speaking of outdoor adventures, be sure to add one of the seven great hikes along the North Country National Scenic Trail to your summer bucket list. |

What we know about the 20-year-old suspect in the apparent assassination attempt of Donald Trump |
The man identified as the shooter in the apparent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump was a 20-year-old from a Pittsburgh suburb not far from the campaign rally where one attendee was killed. Authorities say Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire at the rally before being killed by Secret Service on Saturday, days before Trump was to accept the Republican nomination for a third time. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro confirmed Sunday that former fire chief Corey Comperatore, 50, had died a “hero,” using his body as a shield to protect both his wife and daughter from bullets during the incident. Election Day: With less than a month until Michigan’s primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 6, more than 1.5 million absentee ballot applications have been requested, and 12% have been completed and returned, breaking previous August primary state records, according to the Michigan Secretary of State Office. |

Michigan game regulators make changes to deer hunting rules for 2024. What’s new? |
New rules: Michigan deer hunters will have new opportunities – and restrictions – going into the fall 2024 season after state game regulators made a bevy of tweaks to hunting rules on Thursday, July 11. Notable changes include more hunting opportunities in January, an expansion of an urban archery season beyond Metro Detroit counties, and new limitations on special hunts for youth and hunters with disabilities that restrict them to antlerless deer in 2025. Under repair: Steps are underway to save a beloved warm-water fishing spot in the Pigeon River Country State Forest. Officials announced efforts will begin in August to repair a dam that creates the 161-acre Cornwall Creek Flooding, a treasured Up North recreation area for decades. Michigan initially planned to permanently drawdown the flooding and remove the dam. A new peak: The production of timber, wood furniture, paper and other products stemming from more than 20 million acres of forest, covering about half of Michigan, added more than $26.5 billion in direct and indirect contributions to the economy in 2022. |

Portage man’s telemarketing scam racked up 1,400 victims, U.S. Attorney says |
A Portage man was convicted for a telemarketing scam that likely victimized more than 1,400 people nationwide, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten reports. Irfan Gill, 62, was previously indicted for working with a call center in Pakistan, from as early as June 2018 through at least March 2022, in a telemarketing fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims across the U.S. A homicide suspect wanted in Indiana was arrested in Michigan, according to Berrien County sheriff’s deputies. The suspect, a 48-year-old Indiana woman, was taken into custody Saturday night, July 13. Investigators credited the arrest to license plate readers, which passively monitor vehicles, and notify deputies if a stolen vehicle or wanted individual is observed. Also in crime: Police are investigating after they say a Bad Axe house was shot nearly a dozen times with semiautomatic pistol. Officers learned that a man driving a white sedan stopped in front of the house, fired approximately 11 rounds and drove away, police said. Numerous rounds struck the house but no injuries were reported. |
