Dear Reader,

England has taken a small but significant step towards the end of lockdown today. The “stay home” message has officially been scrapped and people are now allowed to meet outdoors in groups of six or two households, while organised outdoor sports have also returned. You can follow the latest on our liveblog and read a full explanation of what you can and can’t do under the new rules, here.

Last week's protests outside Batley Grammar School over a teacher’s use of cartoons of Mohammed in a religious studies class have brought unwelcome reminders of the murder of the French teacher Samuel Paty. In a powerful and clearly argued column, Charles Moore takes a close look at one of the groups behind the protest and takes on their arguments about freedom of speech.

The Harry and Meghan saga has dominated headlines around the world. Camilla Tominey, our Associate Editor, was the author of arguably the two most important news stories in the whole tale – that the pair were dating and the tear-triggering row at a bridesmaids’ fitting. In this excellent article, Camilla writes about finding herself at the centre of the storm, the relationship between the media and the Royal family and how the abuse she receives shows a deteriorating attitude to journalists in general.

Finally, the Ford Mondeo, once intended as the “world car”, is no more, with production of the saloon to end early next year. While the Mondeo found itself out of date in a world of SUVs and electric cars, it still defined an era. To commemorate its passing, our Cars team has picked six cars from the last six decades that were the Mondeos of their time. (If you want more four-wheeled content, I'd recommend that you should sign up for our Cars newsletter.)
