When New Life Begins

When Kathy Reeg, the president of the Elisabeth Elliot Foundation, reached out to the producers of Elliot’s long-running radio show for some information, she had no idea what they would uncover.

While looking for the requested project, the producers discovered a draft of an unpublished devotional by Elliot called Heart of God: 31 Days to Discover God’s Love for You. The producers and Reeg were floored and delighted.

“Elisabeth was a true spiritual mentor to me throughout my adult years, just as she was for countless others,” said Reeg. “And though we live in different times now, her example of grace, mercy, and love, without compromising belief, still speaks today.”

While some have criticized Elliot for her strong views, Reeg and others hope that readers will look beyond Elliot’s stances and instead see the “generosity of spirit” Elliot displayed throughout her life and ministry. Though her life was marked by many hardships, Elliot’s faithfulness to Jesus remained. Even in the face of great suffering, she allowed herself to be transformed by the power of the gospel.

May the same be true for us as we embrace this truth Elliot put so beautifully: “When we welcome Jesus into our hearts, an old life ends and a new life begins.”
