Prime Minister Boris Johnson is poised to announce the next stages of easing lockdown, including plans for resuming foreign holidays.
View email online | | | | | May 4, 2021 | | | | | | Good evening, Now that we are starting to feel our way out of the pandemic, we can at last start to look further ahead than next week. And it is interesting to start to examine what the economy of the UK - and the world - might start to look like post-Covid. While the impact of the pandemic on many of the least wealthy people has been significantly damaging, for those whose jobs were not impacted, it has been a time to save money. Already we are starting to see the effects of that with people spending cash on new homes, clothes and holiday bookings as that pent-up demand explodes. Interest rates are at an all-time low, so saving doesn’t really make sense if you have something you want or need to buy - particularly big ticket items like property. But what will happen when the country has to start paying back the cash it has borrowed to fund the pandemic? Could the danger be that the boom we see in the next 12 months will fast go bust? It’s tempting to be pessimistic - but we hold our destiny in our own hands. Stay positive, be brave and we will flourish.
