Support education journalism with impact
When we’re at our best, Education Lab journalists aren’t just writing about education. We’re writing for parents, teachers and, most importantly, students who are affected by decisions made in Montgomery and Washington D.C. This month, AL.com is asking for your help support for the Ed Lab. Every donation gets a match from our national partner Report for America. And thanks to RFA, donations are tax-deductible. Contributions directly support Ed Lab staff, including Rebecca Griesbach (her photo is above, far left). Rebecca is a native of Tuscaloosa who joined our team in 2021. Rebecca spends a lot of time covering changes happening in rural schools. She traveled to the small community of LaFayette in Chambers County several times in the last year as the county managed a school merger and reconfiguration — an issue that many rural districts may have to contend with soon. The state's NAACP called her coverage a “compelling article highlighting the threat to Black schools across the state of Alabama.“ At a time when coverage of education is dwindling or going away entirely, our newsroom has expanded its staff and coverage — through your support. It’s critical work — the kind of journalism that helps and supports parents who want their children to thrive at school. |
Nikki Carter and her son, Simeon, get ready for his graduation from Demopolis High School in May. Carter was barred from school property after a verbal confrontation with a school employee. She said she believes the school was retaliating for her work as a parent advocate. (Rebecca Griesbach/AL.com) |
Here are some of Rebecca's recent headlines: What does state intervention mean for Sumter County schools? This mom was banned from her children's schools. Now federal officials are investigating. Your contribution helps get us closer to unlocking additional funds from Report for America so we can provide essential information for communities who want their kids to have their best shot in life. |
