Ben Percy jumps to the big screen to honor his daughter
Minnesota writer Benjamin Percy is known for his horror and science fiction novels, comic books and audio dramas. He’s also written screenplays and now one of them, co-written by Indie film maker James Ponsoldt, has been made into a movie.

“Summering,” directed by Ponsoldt, opens locally on Aug. 12.

It is a coming-of-age story that follows four girls who are on the cusp of entering middle school. On the last day of summer break they find a corpse. They then decide to play detective to try and learn more about the mystery man’s life.

Percy told MPR News’ Jacob Aloi about the film’s inspiration.
State patrol, Metro police step up efforts to reduce violent crime

The State Patrol has been working with the Minneapolis Police Department to crack down on street racing and other traffic stops around the metro area. At the same time, Metro Transit Police have been deploying different tactics to cut down on crime in and around transit and transit stations.

That strategy includes increasing security at transit stations and other facilities, using teams that specifically work with the homeless, using community outreach teams and increasing the presence of officers, uniformed and non uniformed, on transit.

Mall of America gunfire: Suspected gunman, accomplice arrested. Alleged gunman Shamar Alon Lark, 21, and his alleged accomplice, Rashad Jamal May, 23, were taken into custody in Chicago Thursday afternoon by an FBI-led fugitive task force without incident after the pair got haircuts at a barber shop, Booker Hodges, the Bloomington police chief, told reporters. 

FEMA announces emergency aid for 23 counties damaged in May. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced emergency aid for 23 Minnesota counties that sustained a damage from flooding, heavy winds and tornadoes in May. There were at least five tornado touchdowns, including one with 120 mph winds in the tiny town of Forada, near Alexandria in Douglas County. Douglas County Emergency Management Director Julie Anderson joined All Things Considered Thursday to tell us how the cleanup effort is going and how the federal funds might help.

Iowa governor asks court to allow blocked 2018 abortion ban. Reynolds previously said she would turn to the courts instead of calling a special session to hold a divisive abortion debate and vote just months before she and several other Republican leaders run for reelection. The court filing is just the first step in a legal battle that could take months to resolve and end up before the Iowa Supreme Court again.
