“I think farmers are prepared for it. Farmers are anxious to do it, if it's voluntary, if it's market based, if it's incentive based, I think you will see farmers, ranchers and producers cooperate extensively,” Vilsack says.
Will incoming USDA Sec. Tom Vilsack focus his efforts working on behalf of the 80% of the farmers who produce 20% of U.S. agricultural goods; or will he focus on the 20% of farmers who produce 80%?
“It’s back to the conversation of what if I add this,” says Ken Ferrie, Farm Journal field agronomist. “Which tells me, from a profitability side, they’re starting to calculate some better margins.”
