Greetings, New Orleans food fans! This week, Ian McNulty visited Restaurant des Familles, a landmark that's holding its own in Crown Point. Flour Moon Bagels earned high praise from Bon Appetit, and we sent our in-house bagel expert to check it out for us. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen indulged in a shrimp po-boy on an official visit. Buffa's Lounge announced it would close on Monday, then decided to hold off. Finally, the air is sweet with the scent of fresh peaches, and Teresa B. Day has the best recipes for smoothies and even a peach ice cream pie with a cookie crust. 1. Surviving, and thriving. After the pandemic, a fire and a hurricane, proprietors Brooke and Bryan Zar say Restaurant des Familles likely would not have made it without the push they got from regulars and their bayou community neighbors. Ian McNulty tells the tale of this bayou landmark. 2. New York state of mind? Bon Appetit magazine searched the country to find the best bagels outside New York City, and its list includes New Orleans' own Flour Moon. We dispatched our reporter Christina Ferrari, who is from New York, to check it out; Christina has opinions. 3. Wait! There's more. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen appeared to enjoy every bite of her shrimp po-boy at Domilise's Uptown. And after an outpouring of support, Buffa's Lounge said it wouldn't close last Monday after all. 4. Sweet summer! Ripe and juicy peaches are filling the markets. Fill your fruit bowls at home, and try these recipes from Teresa B. Day for a peach ice cream pie and peach smoothies. That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans, the food news never stops. Keep up with all the inside info at Where NOLA Eats. P.S.: Want to support local journalism that matters?
