I knew it was coming. And there it was. The most annoying comment we get on dining stories: "Why is this news!" The comment was left on our story about John Besh and Alon Shaya, two of the city's most famous chefs, splitting up their business partnership. How is that not news? But we often get that question on stories of less importance: chefs moving, restaurants closing. And I understand (sort of). Lots of small businesses close and never get a mention from us. People get hired and fired, and it's not typically news. But context matters. Mayor Landrieu spraining his wrist would not be news. If it happened to Drew Brews, we would send out an alert to your phone. Chefs like Besh and Shaya pay PR people to make them newsworthy (although I'm sure they'd prefer happier news than what happened this week). But even if that weren't the case, in New Orleans we care a lot about food. And we care a lot about food news. That strikes me as a good thing, and one of the many reasons we love living here. -- Todd A. Price |
