Admittedly, most people who care about the Emmys don't spend a lot of time thinking about the Outstanding Commercial category.
But you aren't most people, are you? You literally subscribe to a newsletter called AdFreak. Your nerdery is welcome here.
So let's talk about the ads up for an Emmy this year.
It's largely a usual suspects situation, with a few recurring nominees in the mix: Apple (nominated twice last year, but only once this year, for "Bounce"), P&G and Sandy Hook Promise are back in the mix. Amazon and Jeep round out the shortlist with their Super Bowl ads, "Before Alexa" and "Groundhog Day" respectively.
You can watch all five spots here and pick your favorite.
My money is on Jeep, given the Super Bowl ad's blending of craft and retro-cool culture. (Is Bill Murray ever retro? He just endures forever without waning.)
But given how the relevance of P&G's "The Look"—about the distrustful glances Black men endure when going about their daily lives—has only increased since it debuted last summer, there's a strong argument for that spot taking the top honor.
As with all awards, it's surreal to imagine what next year's lineup will look like. Watching each of this year's nominees, I just kept thinking, "Wow, remember being around people?"
