View in browser APRIL 23, 2019 According to White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation was worse for the country than actual Russian electoral interference.
"You look at what Russia did, buying some Facebook ads to try to sow dissent and do it, and it’s a terrible thing," Kushner said. "But I think the investigations and all of the speculation that’s happened for the last two years has had a much harsher impact on our democracy than a couple of Facebook ads."
Carl Kline, the former security specialist who approved Kushner’s security clearance over the objections of career staffers, was supposed to appear before the House Oversight Committee Tuesday to face questions. That didn't happen, as the White House told him not to comply with the subpoena.
Kline's attorney Robert Driscoll said that Kline risked jeopardizing his job at the Pentagon if he defied the White House. "This decision is not made lightly and does not come from any ill will or deliberate defiance on my part or that of my client," Driscoll wrote to congressional staffers.
"With two masters from two equal branches of government, we will follow the instructions of the one that employs him," Driscoll added.

Analysis and Opinion ANALYSIS VIDEO: The government wants to add a question about citizenship to the census form. "And here's the trick: Both sides of this case, both the government and the states that are opposing it, both agree that adding that question will make the count of the population less accurate, but the government says it's worth it because you'll get interesting data the government can use to enforce the voting rights act... my guess is that the government will prevail." by Pete Williams, NBC News Justice Correspondent (video)
