I’ve got good news and bad news today.

The bad news: The Whitney Museum in New York City suspends its renowned Independent Study Program — and effectively sacks the program’s associate director — after facing pushback for canceling a performance about Palestinian grief. Staff Writer Rhea Nayyar has the story.

The good news: Mexico City is getting a new Frida Kahlo museum, which will explore the artist’s early life and family secrets. It will be housed in her former residence in the Coyoacán neighborhood.

In an illuminating opinion piece, artist Damien Davis admonishes the art world's exploitation of Black queer pain during Pride Month. He writes: “What’s being asked of Black queer artists — year after year, project after project — is to show up, offer our stories, submit our pain, perform our resilience, and trust that someone else will decide how to frame it all.”

Also today: excellent art shows to see this week in New York, a special Pride Month edition of the Hyperallergic Art Crossword, and our monthly Opportunities listings for artists, writers, and art workers.
