Making news on this day in 1976 were concerns over the health of the public as garbage collections in Canberra's south failed to take place. The Department of the Capital Territory said that without regular garbage collections, the risk to public health would increase due to increasing temperatures. The dispute was due to a disagreement between the contracting company Capital Waste and the Transport Workers Union over the number of bins each crew member should be responsible for emptying in a shift.  READ MORE
