| | A deep dive into golf’s most entertaining debate | | There was once a beautiful time when the most heated debate in golf had no lawsuits attached. Even though the conversation stayed away from important stuff like geopolitics, morality, and money, folks who loved golf could talk deep into the night and still be arguing the next morning on the first tee. The question of who's the better golfer, Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, may never be answered satisfactorily, but one of the greatest attempts was penned exactly 20 years ago.
It's uncanny how well Tiger Woods vs. Jack Nicklaus" by Jaime Diaz—a thorough comparison of their respective athleticism, playing styles, anger management, perfectionism, killer instinct, work ethic, swing, body, competitive set, sense of destiny and more—holds up today. It's almost precisely because it was written before the scandals and car accidents and most serious surgeries, before the dreamlike wins at Torrey in 2008 and Augusta in 2019, before the hiring and firing of so many "swing consultants" that there's a purity to the analysis. Woods was 26 years old, in his prime, and no one in the world foresaw what was coming. Yet it's amazing how much Diaz got right. | |
