Thursday, 23 February 2023 New global data on maternal deaths WHO and other UN agencies will release a new report on Thursday (00:30 CET) on levels and trends of maternal deaths, including global, regional and country estimates. Covering the period 2000-2020, this report provides critical data on maternal health outcomes and gender equality worldwide. New donor agreement on bone health and ageing WHO and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) will sign a new agreement to develop a strategic roadmap on bone health and ageing and advocate for a public health strategy to prevent fractures among older people. As part of the agreement, WHO and ESCEO will collaborate to develop global estimates on fracture and osteoporosis; review evidence-based interventions to prevent fractures; and create an economic model for an investment case in fracture prevention and care. For more information, contact Hayatee Hasan at hasanh@who.int. 23-24 February 2023 Fifth Global Ministerial Summit on The Fifth Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, hosted and organized by the Swiss Government, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), will be held from 23 to 24 February 2023 in Montreux, Switzerland. The slogan this year “Less harm better care – from resolution to implementation" reflects the need for sustainable implementation of the Resolution WHA72.6 on ‘Global Action on Patient Safety’ and the ‘Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030: Towards eliminating avoidable harm in health care'. Swiss President, Alain Berset, and the WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, are scheduled to attend, together with ministers of health, political decision-makers and experts in the field from countries around the world. These recommendations are used by the national vaccine regulatory agencies and the pharmaceutical companies to develop, produce and license influenza vaccines. On Friday, 24 February, WHO will then hold a virtual Information Meeting on the recommendations for representatives and individuals from vaccine regulatory agencies, influenza vaccine manufacturers, members of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), and other interested institutions. More here. The information meeting will be followed by a Global Virtual Press Conference where the recommendation will be discussed.
