For the latest news from WHO on COVID-19 and other breaking health stories, read WHO's news updates. 14-30 September WHO at the high-level session of the 76th UN General Assembly (UNGA)The 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will open on Tuesday, 14 September 2021 at the UN Headquarters in New York, in a hybrid (virtual/in-person) format, with limited in-person presence, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Heads of states and governments from 193 Member States will exchange statements in-person and via pre-recorded messages, played in the General Assembly Hall, on the theme “Building resilience through hope – to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people and revitalize the United Nations”. High-level events will include the SDG Moment, Food Systems Summit, High-level Dialogue on Energy, 20th Anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action to tackle racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, and several Member State and partner events, including WHO side events. WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, as well as other WHO officials, will take part virtually in several of the events to highlight the importance of ensuring strong pandemic preparedness and response, as well as equitable access to vaccines and other COVID-19 tools in order to put the world back on the path towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Wednesday, 22 September US virtual global summit on COVID-19 WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is scheduled to speak at the US government summit, hosted by President Biden, which will take place alongside the UN General Assembly. As host of the ACT-A Hub, WHO has been working with partners and US government agencies to align targets with those of the global COVID-19 response for ‘vaccinating the world’ and ‘saving lives now.’ Launch of the WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines 15:00 CEST (press conference) Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General and Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe will launch the new WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs). UN Food Systems Summit In 2019 the UN Food Systems Summit was announced by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, as a part of the Decade of Action for delivery on the SDGs by 2030. The aim of the Summit is to deliver progress on all 17 of the SDGs through a food systems approach, leveraging the interconnectedness of food systems to global challenges such as malnutrition, climate change, poverty, and inequality. The Food Systems Summit itself will be a completely virtual event on Thursday, 23 September 2021 during the UN General Assembly. As an UN Anchor Agency and member of the UN Taskforce of the UN Food Systems Summit, WHO is advancing its work under the 2030 SDG Agenda and Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016-2025) to support Member States towards healthy food system transformation. It is a public event and registration is here Friday, 24 September Release of sequel to “My Hero is You: how kids can fight COVID-19!” The new book, targeting children 6-11 years, aims to help children stay positive during the COVID-19 pandemic and explores the various coping mechanisms that they can use when faced with difficult emotions like fear, grief, anger and sadness. It follows the immensely successful “My Hero is You: how kids can fight COVI-19!” released early in the pandemic and which is now available in more than 140 languages and more than 50 audio, video and print formats. The new book will be available in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swahili on release. Both publications are the result of a collaboration of 60 organizations working in the humanitarian sector, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and Save the Children.
