If confirmed, media advisory with dial-in details will be emailed in advance. 18-24 November 2022 World Antimicrobial Awareness Week World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 November) focuses on the urgent actions needed to stop antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which contributes to more than 5 million deaths from bacterial infections alone each year. Because AMR threatens humans, animals, plants and the environment, the week-long campaign – under the theme of “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together” – brings together leaders and communities across various sectors who are working to preserve antimicrobials. The week will conclude with the Third Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance, hosted by the Sultanate of Oman, in Muscat from 24-25 November 2022. The conference will bring together health, agriculture and environment ministers to discuss the Muscat Manifesto, which sets out targets on AMR, with clear indicators for antimicrobial use in both the human and animal sectors. To set up interviews with WHO leadership at the conference in Oman, please email mediainquiries@who.int Friday, 25 November 2022 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, followed by the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. WHO will join partners, survivors and advocates around the world to amplify the need to prevent and respond to violence against women as a public health, gender equality and human rights priority. In every country and culture, more action is needed to ensure women in all their diversity live a life free of violence and coercion. Global estimates are worrying: About 1 in 3 (30%) women globally experience physical and/ or sexual violence, mostly at the hands of an intimate partner.Such violence starts alarmingly early, almost 1 in 4 (24%) adolescent girls aged 15-19 who have had an intimate relationship has experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner.Health impacts can last a lifetime - violence affects women’s physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health. On the morning of the 25th CET, WHO will be hosting an interactive Twitter Spaces with our leading expert speakers. 1:1 interviews are available on request, please email mediainquiries@who.int More information Event page Friday, 25 November 2022 WHO-CDC joint report on measles elimination The WHO and US CDC will publish the annual joint report regarding progress towards measles elimination worldwide on Friday, 25 November 2022. Historically, measles immunization rates have been slow to increase and fast to decline. Any decline in coverage is deeply concerning as measles is highly contagious and infection carries profound risk during illness and reduces children’s immune resilience for significant periods after the infection has cleared. Measles outbreaks illustrate the weaknesses in health systems, and it is considered a tracer to identify communities at risk. The data outlined in the report is a call to action for public health officials, urging comprehensive action to reach children missed in the last two years. The report reviews the data on measles immunization activities, reported measles incidence and surveillance performance, measles case and mortality estimates, and regional verification of measles elimination from 2021.
