Thursday, 5 May Release of excess mortality estimates associated with the COVID-19 pandemic New WHO excess mortality estimates associated with the COVID-19 pandemic will be released next Thursday at a virtual press conference at 14:00 CEST. Excess mortality includes deaths associated with COVID-19 both directly (due to the disease) or indirectly (due to the pandemic’s impact on health systems and society). This includes deaths attributable to other health conditions which people were unable to prevent or treat due to overburdened health systems. By using statistical modeling to fill data gaps, a more comprehensive and comparable picture of the true impact of the pandemic at global, regional and country levels emerges. The figures will cover the period from January 2020 to December 2021. These findings reflect the collaborative efforts of the WHO-UN DESA Technical Advisory Group and ongoing consultations with regions and countries to develop the methodology and collect additional data where available. In the long-term, the figures will help guide our efforts to strengthen health information systems and ensure every country is better prepared for future outbreaks. The latest estimates, methods and data story will be available on the WHO website following the press conference. The estimates will include global, regional and country figures disaggregated by age and sex, and by World Bank income groups. The methodology document will describe in detail the statistical approaches used to produce the latest excess mortality estimates. A media advisory on how to join the VPC will be issued next week. More information on excess mortality associated with the COVID-19 pandemic is available here. World Hand Hygiene Day Next Thursday is World Hand Hygiene Day. This year’s slogan is ‘Unite for Safety: Clean Your Hands’, the theme is a health care "quality and safety climate or culture” that values hand hygiene and infection prevention and control. This year’s activities are focused on recognizing that we can add to a facility's climate or culture of safety and quality through cleaning our hands, and that a strong quality and safety culture will encourage people to clean hands at the right times and with the right products. Campaign materials can be accessed here, and you can show your face on the World Hand Hygiene Day “faces of the campaign” 2022 wall. Sign up for our newsletters here.
