Plus, what Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman loves about midtown
ALL THE LATEST ABOUT TORONTO THIS WEEK | Shari Becker, a children’s book author and entrepreneur, and John Gauch, a fractional COO, were happy in their progressive Boston enclave. But, when support for Trump’s rhetoric took root across the US, they knew they had to get out. “Our local politicians weren’t restricting abortions or trying to ban books, but there was this constant sense of anxiety,” says Shari. “We felt a pervasive sense of dread.” |

Canada has a lettuce problem. Ninety per cent of the leafy veg is imported, most of it from California. That’s not good for a country embroiled in a trade war or for shoppers desperate to keep food costs down. But one company seems to have found a home-grown solution. Haven Greens operates Canada’s first fully automated greenhouse, which can produce more than 4,500 kilograms of lettuce a day, or 1.6 million kilos a year, all in a single five-acre facility. |
When Kevin Gausman, or “Gaus” to his fans, signed a five-year contract with the Blue Jays in 2021, he and his wife, Taylor, wanted to plant some roots in Toronto. The man with the signature splitter pitch had only been to the city for games and had never ventured north of Queen Street. But, with two young girls, he wanted a house with a backyard that was close to parks and trails. He and Taylor landed on midtown for its mix of leafy residential streets and vibrant main strips. “The more we’ve gotten to know the neighbourhood, the more we love it,” says Gausman. |

The BC-based restaurant group that brought us Black and Blue—the two-storey, 9,000-square-foot steakhouse in the old TSX space—is launching its newest heifer of a project: Riley’s Fish and Steak, a seafood spot and chophouse that already has a Michelin-recommended location in Vancouver. Slated to open in early 2026, Riley’s will move into the 8,000-square-foot space left behind by the Shore Club. |
