Get outdoors for National Public Lands Day |
This week's warm temps makes it a perfect time to enjoy Michigan's great outdoors. In honor of National Public Lands Day this Saturday, Sept. 28, five national parks in Michigan will offer free entry. The usual $25 admission will be waived for Isle Royale National Park, Keweenaw National Historical Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and River Raisin National Battlefield Park. While you are enjoying Mother Nature, consider taking in the fall colors this season on the water. The Ottawa County Parks and Recreation is setting out on five "Color by Kayak" tours in October. The two-hour leisurely guided tours start on Saturday, Oct. 5, with morning and evening trips. |

Why an AI rent algorithm used by landlords is accused of price fixing |
Rental market: In four Michigan cities, a property management company called RealPage offers a sophisticated AI algorithm to suggest rental prices to corporate landlords. But that software is now being accused of artificially inflating rents in a “price fixing conspiracy” that’s harming “millions of Americans," according to the U.S. Department of Justice. A lawsuit filed by the DOJ last month alleges the “unlawful scheme” has pushed rents higher and allows landlords to collude on price increases. The lawsuit follows a 2022 ProPublica investigation into RealPage and a string of class-action lawsuits against the company. It comes as rents have gone up by nearly 20% nationally in the past four years and more than half of Michigan renters struggle to cover housing costs. Speaking of rent: The Flint City Council has agreed to pay the rent for 12 months for a nonprofit organization that manages the Hasselbring Senior Center provided Mayor Sheldon Neeley’s administration drops plans to replace the group. |

These 12 Michigan schools among best in the nation, U.S. Department of Education says |
Best in class: Twelve Michigan schools are among the several hundred across the country recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2024. Schools that earn Blue Ribbon honors are highlighted in one of two categories: Overall academic performance or achievement in closing gaps among different groups of students. Also in the rankings: Nine Michigan universities ranked in the top-300 in the country in the U.S. News and World Report rankings released Tuesday, Sept. 24. The rankings, with the methodology used here, most heavily weighed peer assessment, graduation rates and graduate performance and financial resources per student. Investigating: Two Jewish organizations are offering nearly $2,000 for information about about a string of assaults at University of Michigan, bringing a total reward up to roughly $8,000. |

Outlaws, drugs, guns: Trial begins for Michigan woman accused of executing, torching woman in 2020 |
What's happening: It was August 2020 when a Michigan woman’s burned body was found behind an abandoned schoolhouse in rural Bay County, the apparent victim of a gangland-style execution. Four years later, the woman accused of killing the mother of five and setting her remains on fire to conceal the crime is finally facing a jury. In jail: Police have arrested a suspect in their investigation into a Bay City man’s severed limbs being found in the Saginaw River. Remains of 41-year-old Justie T. Stilwell were found in the waterway on Sept. 18. Police arrested a 40-year-old man and lodged him in the Bay County Jail on an open murder charge. In Kalamazoo: Residents of Interfaith Homes are waiting and hoping for mail service to return after the assault of a mail carrier at the 200-unit complex led to the U.S. Postal Service cutting off the entire community. |

Tim Walz to attend Michigan vs. Minnesota game at the Big House |
Game day visit: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will be at the Big House on Saturday watching the Wolverines take on the Minnesota Gophers. In addition to watching the game, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate is set to speak with students about the power of their vote and the importance of registering to vote ahead of the November election. On the field: No surprise, but the Detroit Lions All-Pro center, Frank Ragnow, who once played through a fractured throat is pushing to play through a partially torn pectoral muscle the week after it happened. The Detroit Pistons have partnered with StockX, the popular Detroit-based online reseller, naming them as their new jersey patch sponsor. The partnership was made official Wednesday afternoon during a community giveback event at Campus Martius, held in front of StockX’s headquarters. |
