Carey Mulligan Rightly Called Out This Disgustingly Sexist Review of Promising Young Woman

Carey Mulligan as Cassie in PromisingYoung Woman stands in the middle of a road, holding a crowbar.

It sure would be nice if 2021 was the year major publications stopped publishing glaringly sexist takes on feminist works. We can dream.

Monday Anime Round-up: Jujutsu Kaisen Beatdown Therapy and the Ultimate Rap Battle

Welcome to the Monday Anime Round-up, a weekly series where I talk about the anime I watched over the weekend. This is week three! Oh my gosh! I've been so on top of things! Which, of course, means that one of the series I was watching is done until 2021 (Moriarty the Patriot) and these last two aired their final episodes. I'm not sure when/if we're getting more Hypnosis Mic and Jujutsu Kaisen will return mid-January 2021.

Last Week of 2020 Gets Extra Baffling as the Internet Investigates the Truth of Hilaria Baldwin’s Identity

Hilaria/Hilary Baldwin and Alec Baldwin

My favorite thing about this entire situation is that Hilaria Baldwin went into her Instagram stories, said she was done posting for a while and going to log off, and then posted like two hours later.

Donald Trump Caves on $2,000 Stimulus Checks After Costing People a Full Week of Unemployment Benefits

Donald Trump rests on the golf course.

Trump clearly wanted to come off as the hero with his demand for larger checks but in the end, he actually made things a whole lot worse for a lot of people.

The Mugen Train Keeps on Chugging as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Becomes the Highest Grossing Film of All Time in Japan

Rengoku eating in Demon Slayer: Mugen Train

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train opened in Japan back in October and has had nothing but good reception since. It even broke the first-day opening record with 1.2 billion yet (11.3 million USD) and went on to gross 4.6 billion yen (44 million) during its opening weekend. From there it's just been nonstop.

In Spite of Things, 2020 Was a Great Year for YA Fiction. Here Are 18 of Our Faves From This Year!

Felix Ever After, Something Happened To Ali Greenleaf, You Should See Me In A Crown book covers.

One of the most admirable things about YA fiction is its ability to provide some of the most heartwarming, imaginative, and sweet-as-pie escapism. And during a heavy year like 2020, teens and adults alike found solace in the YA novels that graced shelves (both physically and virtually).

Friendship Goals: Girlie Vigilantism in Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman

Cassie dressed as a nurse, holding up a scalpel in Promising Young Woman.

Emerald Fennell’s new feature film Promising Young Woman is visually stunning, tightly written, and even though it masquerades as a rape revenge fantasy horror film (which it is), it’s more so a love story. I don’t mean that it’s a romantic comedy—it is certainly not that—but it’s a film about the family you choose, your lifelong friends.

Which Bespectacled DC Villainess Are You?

Are you introverted? Are you shy? Do you perhaps wear glasses? Are you constantly harangued at work by an ill-intentioned boss or harassed by men when you walk home at night? Do you yearn for the power and confidence to stand up for yourself and take what you're rightfully owed? Do you have a sneaking suspicion that you would look amazing in a skin-tight catsuit?

Wonder Woman 1984′s Cheetah Is All Wasted Potential and Bad Implications

Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva, a.k.a. Cheetah, in Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman 1984 isn’t just one of the few superhero movies to have a female lead with the titular heroine, a.k.a. Diana Prince (Gal Gadot). Even in a market already saturated with superhero fare, it’s one of the few to feature a female supervillian. Even juicier—and, potentially, hilarious—is that it’s the Cheetah. How delicious to have a villain who is also a cat, often a symbol of femininity itself?
