Managing Political Tensions

NEW FROM THE CHRONICLE
Hope for the Best, Plan for the Worst

The cauldron of today’s political tensions and psychological traumas continue to be nerve-racking for students and faculty members on campus. A campus attack by a lone perpetrator motivated by extremist rhetoric is a nightmare scenario that college leaders contemplate with dread. Such fears are furthered by the steady drumbeat of mass shootings this spring as America began emerging from Covid lockdowns.

Managing Political Tensions examines why experts predict escalating political conflict in higher education and how the mainstreaming of fringe views heightens the peril of campus violence. It offers advice on how colleges can better monitor such threats, and discusses why communication with law-enforcement agencies and hategroup watchdogs is crucial, and provides curricular and other strategies to help protect students from radicalization.
