Why Church Attendance Is Still Down

I noticed something strange last Sunday. Our normally jammed sanctuary was about half empty. “A lot of people out,” I commented to my wife. We both knew why. The recent Covid surge has people at home sick—or just staying away to avoid infection. It makes sense. But what has some pastors concerned is that two years into the pandemic attendance is still down, even when there hasn’t been an uptick in Covid cases.

This report sheds light on who is staying away and why. The research also highlights some opportunities for churches. The recent declines in attendance make it especially important that you engage new people when they visit your church. Connecting Newcomers is a 22-page resource offers biblical reflection, wisdom from experienced pastors, and practical tips on how to connect newcomers into the life of your church.
