I’m really impressed with Renault’s thinking when it comes to the imminent appointment of Suzuki MotoGP lynchpin Davide Brivio as CEO of its rebranded Alpine Formula 1 team.

Clearly inspired by Renault CEO Luca de Meo, who worked with Brivio previously with Yamaha in MotoGP, it’s a smart move – albeit outside of the box in terms of his lack of F1 experience. He’s a really sharp mind, with a track record of extracting success from a team that perhaps isn’t quite extracting the correct sum of its parts.

Renault F1 has been a team that’s heading in the right direction; under Brivio it’s likely to get to the intended destination that little bit faster

The return of Fernando Alonso to the renamed Alpine team is a sure sign of the team's ambition. But its latest appointment from MotoGP could be an even bigger coup as it seeks to end a barren run stretching back to Alonso's 2006 world title.
