The Right to Read Anything You Want

Can you believe that in the year 2024 there are thousands of books being banned across America—and that the number is growing fast? As right-wing activists take over school boards, authors are being harassed, teachers are being fired, and librarians are being threatened with staggering fines and even jail time.

It’s time to take a stand against censorship and the unpopular book bans that are sweeping our country.

In April, The New Republic is teaming up with PEN America and the American Library Association to stage a national Right to Read Celebration, where we’ll unveil the ALA’s Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024 and give the new Toni Morrison Courage Award to brave authors, teachers, and librarians on the front lines fighting book bans. All of this will be livestreamed across the country—including in Florida, Texas, and other states where books are currently banned.

But we can’t do this without you! We need to raise $25,000 to celebrate our Right to Read and fight back against book banning.

Do you love books and understand how important they are in people’s lives? Do you believe in the First Amendment and freedom of expression?

Will you help us today?

Yes, I’ll help!
