It never ceases to amaze me the ways that Formula 1 can create a can of worms for itself, and the debate over porpoising is a spectacular case in point. Red Bull and Mercedes are at polar opposites over the issue, while caught in the middle is the FIA, which is keen to do something about the potential health risk to F1’s drivers. Hence its technical directive, issued last Thursday, aimed at ‘reducing or eliminating this phenomenon’. What was odd was how Mercedes, the team worst-affected by porpoising going into Canada, already had a second floor stay designed and in place on its car – thus the timing of the TD raised many an eyebrow. Surely it hadn’t been tipped off in advance? Mercedes removed the part after practice – it said on performance grounds, but it clearly could have been protested by rivals. After all, a technical directive is not a rule change. What happens between now and the British Grand Prix will be fascinating to follow… By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com |
