Why Is Gratitude So Hard?

The other day I was complaining about something trivial when I felt a twinge of guilt. What am I doing? I thought . I have an incredible life. I have a great marriage, healthy children, and a job that I love. There’s absolutely no reason for me to complain. Yet there I was, bellyaching about a silly inconvenience. When you ask people how they’re doing, they sometimes respond, “I can’t complain.” But as I’ve discovered, you can always complain, no matter how much you’ve been blessed.

Ingratitude is even worse for those of us who are Christians. We been adopted into God’s family. We’re co-heirs with Christ. Even when the circumstances of our life sour, we have much to be grateful for. That why I was grateful (pun intended) for this article on how Gratitude Changes Our Desires. In it, the authors explore the question of why gratitude is so important—and yet sometimes so hard.

One way to make sure you’re cultivating gratitude is by attending to your health and wholeness. Our resource on the topicoffers articles, assessments, and discussion questions to help you and your leaders understand the spiritual importance of physical health, pursue it in your own lives, and lead others in honoring God with your bodies.
