Report shows trends for workers with disabilities

More workers with disabilities found jobs last month, according to the Department of Labor. Among people with disabilities, 8.7% were unemployed in September, compared with 11.3% in August, while the overall jobless rate climbed slightly to 5%.

More than two-thirds of construction companies find it difficult to hire craft workers they need, according to the Associated General Contractors of America, and in Florida, 68% of those surveyed struggle to fill salaried positions. The Florida Department of Transportation, the Miami Jobs Corps Center and CareerSource South Florida will hold a career fair Tuesday to connect construction employers with potential workers.

United Technologies to transfer pension liability through annuity contract
A group annuity contract from Prudential Insurance will be used to assume pension liabilities for 36,000 US retirees in United Technologies plans who are paid monthly benefits of $300 or less. "It just made a lot of sense from an economic perspective to transfer those liabilities (for participants with small monthly benefits) to an insurer whose core business is managing retirement assets," said Robin Diamonte, UTC's chief investment officer.
