I feel kinda flummoxed every time it happens. Humans have been making music for tens of thousands of years; how could these chords, notes and emotions never have been put together like this before?
Why is it that, of the thousands of new songs I've heard this year, this is the one I cannot stop playing?
I'm obsessed with 'The Steps' by HAIM, from
their excellent Women In Music Pt. III album.
There's nothing particularly ground-breaking about it, but in a year of darkness, this has brought so much light into my life.
The sound of the drums and guitars, the unbeatable vocal melody, and the immense power of those HAIM harmonies are all amazing. But it's the indescribable spirit and energy of the song that makes me feel like there's light in this world.
I've no interest in dissecting it any further, beyond telling you no piece of music this year has made me feel so alive.
I can't promise you'll obsess over the song like I have, but if you haven't heard, you should.
