January 28, 2021 ![]() The rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine has been anything but smooth, as the 50 states each have their own scheme for getting needles into arms. The confusion has led to a string of stories from around the country of wealthy Americans trying to use their money, power, and influence to get access to the vaccine sooner. There should be a guaranteed timeline by now for everyone to know when it'll be their turn. "But as that hasn’t happened yet, the system has defaulted to its usual disparities in access to treatment," Hayes Brown writes.
"The shutting out of Black Americans, the upper class trying to skip the line while seniors slept in their cars earlier this month waiting for the chance of a shot, the implied scarcity of a public good, it all mirrors broader problems in American health care," Brown continues. "The botched rollout isn’t a fluke — it’s the norm, just with a brighter spotlight."
