Job growth estimates show impact of interest-rate hikes
US Federal Reserve Building (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
Estimates of the upcoming jobs report for November suggest that the numbers could show the sort of downward trend sought by Federal Reserve policymakers working to bring inflation under control. In addition, hourly earnings are expected to be up 4.6% on a year-over-year basis, which would be the lowest annual gain since August 2021, according to a Bloomberg survey.

Recruiting & Retention
Forty-one percent of job postings in the US include a requirement for a college degree, a drop from 46% at the beginning of 2019, per the Burning Glass Institute. A tight labor market is contributing to the trend, and companies such as IBM, Walmart, Delta and Google are taking advantage to hire workers based on their skills rather than their education.

Health & Wellness
Craving sugar is "for the most part harmless and a natural occurrence," says registered dietitian Maya Feller, and is often driven by feeling tired, stressed, or when the nutrients in your gut may not be sufficient or your system is confused by artificial sweeteners. Since "sugar is rapidly metabolized and is the body's preferred source of energy," Feller says, foods containing complex carbohydrates and prebiotics including nuts, fruit, whole grains, dark chocolate and fatty fish can offer the necessary fiber and vitamins that can help stabilize blood sugar and curb cravings.

Kanoe Namahoe column

Sugar is the devil.

And I danced the cha cha with it on Thanksgiving. Bourbon and chocolate pecan pie. Cousin Mitzy’s cinnamon rolls (oh that icing!). Sweet potato pie. Dark chocolate covered mango slices on my charcuterie tray and (the worst of them all) several handfuls of white chocolate trash mix -- rice cereal, peanuts, plain M&Ms and pretzels coated with white chocolate. By the night’s end, I was in the fetal position on the couch, cursing my lack of discipline.

So I read with interest today’s Health & Wellness story about curbing sugar cravings. I do not need to spiral into diabetes. (I’m already at risk for that owing to my family health history.) I need to get a handle on this. And my first step will be going to Vons later today and stocking up on kale, spinach, cashews and almonds, and purple potatoes.

How was your Thanksgiving holiday? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
