 BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer Gov. Jeff Landry suffered a stunning defeat when voters rejected four proposed constitutional amendments. The measures got hit from both the left and the right: Religious organizations on the political right worried about losing property tax exemptions, and a coalition of community, social justice and advocacy organizations on the political left that feared limits on state spending as well as harsher punishments for juveniles in the criminal justice system. With a new mayor in place, St. George officials may try to revisit the home rule charter issue once the council runoffs are decided. Voters defeated the proposed charter, which would have divided power among the city council, mayor and city manager. All told, 55% of the voters rejected the proposal. The process to get another charter proposal before the voters would take two to three years at a minimum. Meanwhile, St. George will operate under the Lawrason Act, which is the state's default government. Staff writer Patrick Sloan-Turner takes a deep dive into the matter.
LSU's Tigers lost the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight tournament for the second year in a row. This time, it lost to the No. 1 seed UCLA's Bruins 72-65. Staff writer Reed Darcey says LSU committed too many turnovers and missed too many shots to earn a place at the Final Four. Bad news, of course. But coach Kim Mulkey's magnolia jacket was sure a winner. |
