The Australian Grand Prix has become the iconic Formula 1 World Championship opener of recent times, and although Melbourne has done a superb job in keeping COVID-19 cases down in the city, you can see why it wouldn’t want to take a risk so soon in 2021. The local government actually managed to eradicate the virus from its population in November, thanks to a stringent ‘go for zero’ approach. The variant COVID strains that have emerged recently provide good reason for concern and caution, and the Australian Open tennis championships – set to take place next month – have already caused some player quarantining fears among hotel owners there. With new cases still in single figures locally right now, the prospect of a thousand staff flying into Melbourne from Europe sadly looks likely to be one step too far.
